1) Used Lava Island

Hi Jann,

Our church used Lava Island last year.  We really enjoy using all of
Group's materials.  We have used them for VBS for the past 5 years or so.
It is very easy to use.  The kids really enjoy it and the music is always
You need to buy the books, the critters, and the video.  The crafts are
nice because you don't have to go out and buy all of the items needed.
However, I find them to be expensive.  If you have a crafty person in your
congregation, then they could probably come up with some alternatives.  I
will check with our Board of Christian Education and see if we can give
any unused materials that we may have.

2) Mother / Daughter Banquet

I have not done a mother/daughter banquet, however, I have done teacher
appreciation banquets.  I would suggest a few things for you Wanda.  1.
Make corsages for all the mothers and daughters.  Make a few extra
corsages without the bow that you can put into a clear glass bubble bowl
as a center piece.  Add the corresponding ribbon to the top of the glass
bubble bowl right at the neck of it.  Also, put some loosely crumpled
clear plastic wrap in the bottom of the bubble dish underneath the
corsage.  Make these corsages to your color theme.  2.  For a touching
moment, have either the mother or daughter give a brief testimonial about
how much the other means to them or have them read a poem about
mothers/daughters.  And 3.  For food I would suggest something inexpensive
and easy to prepare and serve.  You may wish to consider lasagna or
chicken alfredo.  Serve these with a nice salad, garlic bread, and a

I hope your event goes well!

3) Mother daughter banquet

we started doing this a couple of years ago at my church...we have a salad
lunch...each family brought some type of salad dish...church provides
beverages, plates,etc...for decorations each family decorates their own
table...the first year was with your own pictures/china/ any other family
"special" ornaments to represent what your family was about...then after
that each year had a theme like "angels among us"...different angel
figurines, place mats, candle holders, etc...some families go all out and
bought/made elegant chair covers and center pieces...we have a speaker,
the first year was the grandmother of the lady who started this...we
fellowship and eat...then we had pictures made in front of a
decorated lattice we have...everyone judges which table is the best and
that family gets like a gift certificate to whereever...

4) Outreach ideas?

There is a project (apartments) across the highway (street) from my
church.  They do not attend worship services, but they will allow their
children to come for different outside activities (basketball, hayrides,
clothes giveaway, etc.).  We had a global mission conference and the
apartment manager allowed the missionaries to come, allowing use of their
conference room.  I offered free easter baskets to every adult that
brought a child and it worked.  The apartment manager said that we can use
their conference room in the future for the tenants, since everyone seem
to enjoy themselves.  Any ideas?  The unit consist mostly of single
parents.  This is a high crime area with young people, drugs, abuse,
etc. It appears that a door has been opened.  Any suggestions?  Goal is to
eventually get them into Sunday School and Bible Study, but until then,

Can you help?

5) Mother / Daughter Banquet

We once had a tea party-brunch. We dressed up in fancy dresses and hats
had a blast! We had croissants and, of course, tea! We used "real" china
for this and decorated very fancy...it was very nice. We also had a funny
fashion show. Different women and their daughters made up their own
fashions to model (like a tea dress--with tea bags hanging all over). The
theme was Hats off to Mother!

6) Lava Lava Island

This message is for Jann who inquired about Lava Lava Island VBS programs.
I have not personally used the Lava Lava Island VBS, but I did write a
Lava Lava Island lesson plan as part of the Sunday School free weekly
newsletter that I send out. It would enable you to add to the Lava Lava
Island curriculum should you choose to use it, would provide alternate
crafts, snack ideas, and so on and so forth. The lesson plan can also be
used without purchasing Lava Lava Island curriculum. If you are interested
in receiving the lesson plan, please feel free to e-mail me at:
batraylover_23@earthlink.net I would be happy to share the resources with

7) Salvation Call Follow-Ups

This message is in response to the posting about Salvation Call
Follow-Ups. I would say that the most important type of follow-up after
someone has accepted Christ into their life is to make sure that the
person owns a Bible. If they do not own a Bible, they should be supplied
with one, or given a place where they can get one for free, there are lots
of agencies who will give people free Bibles to put them in the hands of
as many people as possible. Secondly, I think it is so important for new
believers to either have a prayer partner or a mentor, someone who can
regularly pray with them, encourage them, show them the "ropes" of a
specific ministry or small group, etc. If you can think back to the time
when you first accepted Christ into your life, it is likely possible that
the whole idea of church and being a Christian made very little sense,
other than you knew what it meant to be saved. It's important that they go
through classes such as a New Believers Class, or some other sort of Bible
study to help them learn what it's all about. Most of all they need the
love and support of their church family.

Sarah in California

8) Mother / Daughter Banquet

For Wanda:
Our church had a lovely Ladies Tea for the mother/daughter banquet a few
years back.  To make it easier to put together, the main "hostess"
(pastor's wife) took volunteers for table hostesses.  Each table hostess
brought in her own china and silverware, and was responsible for
decorating a table.  The tables held 8 people, and as the church signed
up, everyone was assigned to one of the tables.  The hostesses took care
of their tables for everything - got their drinks, brought the food, etc.
For decorations they hung sections of white gauzy fabric from the ceiling
in the center to the corners of the room and then laid silk flowers on the
fabric so you could see the flowers through it.  Around the room, they
hung small arrangements of flowers and the fabric.  The tables all had
cloth tablecloths, and various flower arrangements and special items from
the hostess' homes.  Having personalized tables was a great honor for the
hostesses, and everyone had a wonderful time.
For food, they served a variety of hot and iced teas, cut vegetables and
dip, finger sandwiches, macaroni salad, and individual miniature cakes.
For a special presentation, the church invited some women community
leaders - for example, one was on the board of education and one was in
the mayor's office.  They recognized their commitment to the community and
gave them a gift of a desk clock engraved with name and date and the
church name.  They also had a woman speaker, along with a few special
songs by women in the church.
It was such a special time, and different from the "normal"
mother-daughter banquets.  I hope this helps you as you prepare!

--> Amazing Miracles of the Bible

God’s glory and love are revealed through the miracles he performed and
were fully realized when he came to earth in the form of a man to save
mankind. By studying the miracles of the Bible children will gain a better
understanding of God’s love and faithfulness and how he continues to be
loving and faithful in miraculous ways to his people today. Great for
rotation-type programs!

9) Multicultural "M's"

I work at a Christian Preschool Center. Last summer we taught a unit in
August on world neighbors. It ended up being more about Missions than
truly Multicultural but we had so much fun we are going to have a missions
theme all summer this year. I work with 3's and 4's and was racking my
brain for an illustration that we are all the same inside. I thought of
using M & M candies. I handed out one to eat child with the instruction
NOT to eat them but to look at them. (the hard part) and then when we all
had them I asked everyone to look at theirs and their neighbors and tell
me what they saw. The children recognized that they had different colors
and some had M's on them and some didn't. Some even had a dent in them
instead of being perfectly round. Then I asked the all to bite the candy
in half and look at theirs again and their neighbors. The children
recognized that they were all the same inside. That led to the discussion
about all of us being different on the outside but th
e same on the inside. We then all put our hands together and looked at the
differences. We had a wonderful discussion and then, more M & M's. I don't
know if I had read this somewhere and forgot about it or if it was divine
intervention but it ended up being exactly what we needed for our

11) I Have Used Materials

I have a quantity of children's bulletins that could still be used if the
date is changed. I also have a couple of other children's ministry books
that I'm no longer using. They're packaged in a box and ready to be
mailed. Would anyone like these?

12) Unruly Child...Parents No Help

Perhaps you can help us. We have a small church in the country. There are
several people who are kin to this child who is two years old. They do not
know how to discipline him. He is cute but he will not stay in his seat
and people during the sermon, are constantly chasing this child. They are
bouncing up and down to grab him off of the alter. My husband, (Jim the
pastor) has said very nicely to take him downstairs. They do for a minute
and are up again doing the same thing. He isn't getting anything out of
church as he is too young.  The mother really got mad when Jim said to
take him downstairs. Some new people were at church and sitting behind me
. They said comments like I can't keep listening as he is a distraction.
Isn't the pastor going to do something about the little boy? Jim has
talked to them but it doesn't work. They are too caught up in his
cuteness.What to do?!
