1) Daniel and the Lion's Den/Prayer Boxes

Using small boxes (10 oz. milk boxes work well) wrap the outside with gold construction paper. On a separate sheet of paper draw a lions face. Decorate with wiggly eyes, yarn, etc. Paste this to one side of the box. Make 5 or 6 tails by gluing large teardrop shaped construction paper onto craft sticks. Have the children think of short prayers and write them on each tail. Put the tails in the box as you would pencils in a pencil holder.
Good luck and God Bless.

2)
Fall Festival

We call ours "All God's Creatures Carnival". The children can dress up, but are encouraged to stay away from scary costumes. We have a cake walk, "fishing" for cookies, the youth make a giant maze to crawl through, then there are traditional games such as pick a duck from the pond, pencil pull, beanbag toss, dart throw, tic-tac-toss, etc. This year we also have a puppet team that will put on a couple of performances to help spread the gospel message. We advertise in the schools to help draw in some others.

4)
Fall VBS?

I would like to sign up at my church to lead VBS. I would like it to be
organized. Can I get some ideas on how to have a successful one and how do
you get the word out to other children? I'm wanting to do a fall VBS.
Thanks for any ideals. Email me at sw4p@virginia.edu. Thanks

6) Ideas for 4-5 Year Olds

This is my favorite age to tech. Your SS manual should have ideas that work for this group. We use Word Aflame Publication SS materials (www.upci.org, click on WAP then on curriculum. You can download a sample lesson). It has 6 activities for each lesson.

Last year in our 6-7 year materials we did Bible Times. We decorated our room like a market place with different vendor booths. The kids got coins each week and once a month they spent them at the vendor stands.

There are so many web sites and also books at the Christian bookstore. Take your lesson for the week (maybe it is about David), and look for ideas. Here's a few: make a harp, make sheep & pretend to be a shepherd. Make sheep masks and let the kids be the sheep. Make "stones" to eat (these are simple cookie type snacks the kids can make). Find a rock polisher and polish stones for the five smooth stones. Find an autoharp and bring it to class. If one is not available, bring a guitar (even a play one), and explain that a harp has strings like a guitar. Let the children take turns playing it.
Change activities every 5-8 minutes. This keeps their attention.

We have a file folder for each Bible character. We put ideas and activity papers in the folder. When a teacher needs something she goes to the at folder. We also have a matching picture file (envelopes made from poster boards folded in half and taped on the sides). All large pictures/visuals go in the picture file.

Hope this helps. Email me if you need more ideas.
Teresa

7) Lock-In Harvest Party

I am a member of a small church and once a year we have a lock up party. We invite children ages 6-12 to come with there sleeping bags and pj's and we lock them up in the church from 6:00pm to 8:00am .We have pizza, and snacks and play games and give away prizes and treat bags.We play praise and worship songs and biblical movies that are on there level. Last year we planned this for the weekend of Halloween and it was wonderful. The kids had a great time and we the adults had just as much fun . There was a great turn out we usually only have around twelve children in this age group on an average each Sunday ,however we had about fifty kids for our lock up last year. Some children had never experienced how fun serving God can be. I think it is our responsibility to show our youth that serving God is not about missing out on fun things but it is about finding those fun things that please God and bring us into a closer relationship with him. If anyone would like more info about this feel free to e-me at

8)
Clubs or Programs

Our church is a small church as well and watching our finances are also limited. I do a "Children's Inspirational Time" during service. I went to a Bible bookstore and bought a book called "Celebrating Walking With Jesus" it cost under 10 dollars and it has about 20 lessons in it. Each subject has a devotional that you can do (I make a poster board with pictures on it to go with he lesson) It has your Bible scripture the story comes from, along with a craft. The kids have been seeming to enjoy it. So my suggestion is go to the nearest bookstore and see what they have available.
Hope this helps.
Mary
