Object Lesson: God makes you grow to become righteous.
In today's lesson we will learn that God makes you grow to become
righteous. (As you say the Bible point, have children use these
motions: Grow: Crouch down then rise up with arms
outstretched. Righteous: Two thumbs up with a big smile.)
(Begin the lesson by playing a quick game of guess the opposite.)
What's the opposite of: happy?, up?, left?, sweet?, over?, good? Psalm
1 speaks about two opposites: Wicked people and righteous people. What
do you think it means to be wicked? (Someone who has not been
forgiven of their sins, and who lives a life apart from God.) What
does it mean to be righteous? (Emphasize "right" when
you say the word) It's a big word, but listen to the first part of the
word for a clue. (To be righteous means to be made
"right" by God. To become righteous, a person must
believe that Jesus died for them, taking on the punishment he or she
deserved for sinning, and that Jesus was raised to life to give
eternal life to all who believe and follow him. As you follow Jesus,
he will then begin to make you more and more like him in the things
you say, think, and do. As you hear Psalm 1 read, listen how the
wicked and the righteous are described.
Enrichment Idea: As you read
the following Bible verses, have the children hold their thumbs up
when they hear anything about God, righteous people, or good things,
and have the children point their thumbs down when they hear anything
about wicked or sinful people.
Read Psalm 1
"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish."
How does God describe the wicked? (Like chaff-debris in harvesting:
useless husks that are blown away by the wind making the threshing
floor clean; Will not be able to withstand God's punishment in the
judgment; Not be able to be with the righteous in the assembly:
Eternity, Heaven.)
How does God describe the Righteous? (Blessed or happy are
those that don't hang out with the un-Godly, Delights in the LORD,
Meditates on God's Word "the Law", like a fruit-bearing tree
planted by streams of water whose leaf doesn't wither)
Enrichment Idea: (Choose one
child to come up front and pretend to be a tree. Have the child flex
his or her muscles to represent a big, strong tree.)
Say: "I just bought this beautiful tree at the store. I need
to take it out of the pot and plant it. What do I need to do to make
it grow big and strong?" (Plant it in good soil and in a sunny
place. Then water it and fertilize it. A tree like the one we just
read about is able to help people by giving them food and shade, as
well as help animals by providing food and homes for them) If I
didn't take care of the tree, what would happen? Yes, it would die. This Psalm tells us the righteous are like a fruit-bearing tree
planted by streams of water. We are made righteous by
Jesus' death on the cross. But to grow big and strong in our faith we
must be planted in good soil by reading God's Word and
praying to him. Then we are able to help other people like the tree in
our Bible story. What are some ways we can help others
learn about God's love? (telling them, showing kindness, praying for them,
being a good friend, helping them, etc.)
If you're not sure if you've been made "righteous"
by God, you can ask him right now to forgive you, and cleanse you.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for dying in my
place. Thank you for taking the punishment that I deserve for sinning.
Thank you for making me right with God. Help me to follow you
all my days. Help me to tell others about your love and forgiveness.
Amen.
Memory Verse: "
For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish."
Psalm 1:6. Optional: Act out
motions to Psalm 1:6. (Allow the children to help create and agree on
the motions.)
Optional: Give
each child a small pack of tree seeds to take home as a reminder that God
makes us grow to become righteous. Write "Psalm 1" on
the outside of the package.
