Umbrella Sermon

God's Protection Over Our Lives

Prop: Large, golf-style umbrella

Scriptures
"Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings" Psalm 17:8.
"for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" Hebrews 13:5.

Message
Once, after a horrible fire, a mother hen was found. Her body was charred black from being completely burned. The person that found the charred hen only noticed it because they heard peeping sounds in the area. When the charred mass was kicked aside, tiny baby chicks ran out in all directions! The babies were fine, but the mother hen had given her life to protect them during the devastating fire.

This reminds me of how God loves us. HE loves us SO much he wants us to gather under His "wings" so that HE can protect us from the evil around us today.

To explain this a bit better, I brought a BIG umbrella. Watch how big it becomes when I open it up.

(Open the umbrella)

Let's pretend that we are in trouble and the umbrella represents God's protection for us. Tuck in under the "shadow of HIS wings" with me.

(Choose several children - depending on their size - to come under the umbrella with you.)

Whenever we want to be protected (and that should be all the time!) we only need to remember to pray and ask God to protect us. Because the Bible has God's Words recorded for us, we can be assured that even in scary situations, GOD will protect us. Just as the mother hen spread her wings to protect her babies, we can trust God to protect us.

(Drop down as close as possible to the floor so that the children are able to feel the covering.)

Read the following scripture,  "Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings" Psalm 17:8.

When we find peace as we pray, we can move about knowing that GOD is always with us. One of God's wonderful promises to us in the Bible is Hebrews 13:5, "for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

Let me show you another way that the umbrella explains God's protection. Why do we use an umbrella? Right! When the rain falls, we have a choice to get under the umbrella or walk in the rain instead. If we choose to walk in the rain, we are going to get wet! But, if we stay under the umbrella, the rain will not soak us! That's how it is with God's protection. God allows us to make our own choices. If we choose God's ways, we are protected. But, if we choose not to obey God or make decisions that don't please God, it is like we want to walk in the rain unprotected. If we make unwise choices, we are unprotected and will get "wet." When we realize that our decision was not pleasing to God, we should run back under HIS umbrella as quickly as possible and ask for forgiveness. We will begin to dry off and soon be walking with God again, protected from the storms of life.

(Invite small groups or individuals to join you in this demonstration as well.)

Don't you think it is a much better idea to walk with God and do things HIS way? I hope that next time it rains, or the next time you have a decision to make that you will think about what you have learned today about God's love and protection.

Suggested Prayer
"Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you so much for telling us in the Bible how much you love us. Thank You for Your commandments to help us know the right things to do. Thank You for Your Promises, that you will never leave us and that you will cover us to protect us if we just call out to in prayer. We love you so much!

In the Name of Jesus we pray,
AMEN!"
