What's In That Box?

Children's Bible Lesson on Philippians 2:7

Prop: an empty box.

There is something in this box that will show us what had to happen to Jesus for HIM to be able to become our Savior. What do you think is in the box?

Is it a manger where HE was born - he had to come as a little baby?
Is it a crown of thorns? He had to Suffer for us.
Is it the nails that held JESUS to the Cross in the crucifixion?
Is it a small cross that represents where Jesus was nailed to die for our sins?
Could it be Blood? Jesus had to shed blood for us.

Philippians 2:7 tells us the answer; it explains what Jesus had to do to be the Savior of sinners.

(Open box and show children what’s inside...)

Nothing is in the box! Philippians 2:7 says, "...he (Jesus) made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” He went from being the King of Kings, being LIKE GOD -- to nothing. He showed up on earth with nothing. On earth he had nothing. When he went to heaven he took nothing --- except every sin that every man, woman, boy and girl, would ever commit.

In Heaven, JESUS had equal status with GOD - but he gave up everything in Heaven to be a servant on earth. He put aside his God-self, HIS own deity, to become a lowly human being. He had to be EMPTY of God to become Man to understand our world - our temptations and sorrow. And like JESUS, our hearts must become like this box - EMPTY - nothing in it. We must empty our sin out to Jesus in confession, the way he emptied himself to God. If we don't give all our sin to JESUS, our hearts are not empty and Jesus and sin cannot be in the same place.

Today, I hope you get alone with God and empty out your heart of all the sin, pain, and guilt. Jesus can then fill your heart up with GOODNESS and blessings.
